Tell your story: Fiction Challenge

Tue Oct 9, 2012, 9:39 PM
  • Listening to: ebook: Alastair Reynolds - Century Rain
  • Drinking: Coffee - The liquid of kings

I absolutely love fiction, but tend not to dedicate much time to it myself in between uni and what painting I can get done in between it. In light of this along with the series of paintings Ive done with little real direction Id very much like to give fiction-go-ers something fun! This competition is OPEN from now until January 1st 2013!

I have painted a series of pictures that go together. In the past I have been asked about the story behind them, however I have to admit Im a dreadful artist and generally theres nothing too deep in any of my artwork. I see something cool in my head - I paint/draw it! However this series of pictures has most certainly evolved to a point where they could paint images of a fantastic journey. What is it? you decide!

Im not a fan of rules and all they do in this case is squander creativity!

* Competition is OPEN until January 1st 2013!
* The fiction can be as long or as short as you like.
* The story should be inspired by this series of scifi paintings.
* You are free to create characters from people depicted in the images in any way you see fit.
* You want one of them to die a horrible death? no worries!
* The story you tell must take place in a science fiction universe
* Im in Astrophysics, I'l know if you explain your star-drive badly ;) (just kidding, if you want it to be powered by hopes and dreams thats cool with me)
* Stories containing gore or any other explicit material is fine. (note: vampires dont sparkle in space)

Fiction will be judged by a panel of three people. The following qualities will be something we are looking for:

* Character development
Characters, just like humans (but not Edward) are flawed. Sometimes characters are hated, other times they might struggle to be kind, or compassionate. Its important that characters have well defined strengths and weaknesses

* The world you create
One of the greatest wonders of science fiction are the wonderful worlds of tomorrow that are created. This sets scifi apart from fantasy in that unlike fantasy, scifi stories could just as well take place five  minutes from now. Even in short science fiction stories, the ability to create an environment and give the reader a feel for the place they are in is important.

* Overarching Themes
Science Fiction often deals with important issues of today, in the far future. The quality of themes used in your fiction are important and considered closely.

* Quality and Quantity
Given the length of your piece we will be looking at how effectively you portrayed the above things within your story.

*First Place
First place will receive a Fella bundle from the DA store and 400 points to put towards whatever your heart desires!

*Second Place
Second place will receive a DA accessory pack and 400 points.

*Third Place
Third place will receive 800 points to spend in the DA store, or towards whatever evil plans they're planning.

If anyone has questions they would like to ask and have answered in regards to the paintings or their content then ask away. I will update this section with the relevant answers as they come in.

Let me know how you feel about the challenge in the comments section of this journal entry! and get writing!

Awww, I guess its over now, just as I was free from family wedding drama... unless the contest closes at midnight tonight :P that gives me plenty of time to proof read and decide whether my attempt is worth entering. Regardless, it was fun :D

This looks like an awesome contest - and its to do with WRITING! - your drawings are stunning, honestly, I think I spent a good five minutes staring at each of them and just imagining the potential story behind them. The only thing is, I've never written sci-fi before and although this seems like a great opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and explore different genres, I REALLY don't want to screw up someone else's creative world i.e. I'm not sure if I can do it justice.

That being said, I'm still interested, so I'm going to keep an eye on this and hopefully get something done before New Year's if my dissertation stays in check and allows me time to write something fictitious.

Thankyou so much for your kind words! I assure you there is absolutely nothing you could possibly to do to screw anything up! This is all about what you get from it. Science Fiction is something that varies massively from writer to writer. Where fantasy is about imagining a world that doesnt exist within our own, science fiction is about imagining a future we have not yet seen.

I hope you manage to wrangle a bit of creative you time, I know Id absolutely love to experience the world you get from these :D xx

English is a silly and confusing language! Youre welcome to write in Russian. I wont be able to read it, but Ill sit and imagine its something really victorious and uplifting haha! Ignorant Australians...dont speak anything other than English :p

No! I didn't want to say that australians are clueless or something like this. I wanted to say - it's pity that I don't know english so well to write something on it. That's why I will not write, only read :)
vegarBlack Featured By Owner Oct 27, 2012  Student Artist
I didnt think that was what you were saying, I was just making fun of myself :p Most countries require you to learn english in school, but in Austraia we really dont have to learn any other languages, which is silly, because we are a very multicultural country! if anything we should be required to speak more languages than most. Your english seems extremely good though :)

I understand ;) Thanks for such nice words about my English, but I think it isn't so good how must be :D

Im definitely interested. I have a few questions, kind of random though. The characters in the paintings: Do they have names? You said you had no story behind it, but the locations in the paintings, do they have any names or do you care if i just make everything up as i write?
vegarBlack Featured By Owner Oct 10, 2012  Student Artist
Im glad youre interested! The good thing about these pictures is that really, they are highly interpretable. These arent to be treated like OC's or anything like that because they arent. Names, locations, even orders of events shown in the pictures are entirely up to you. You might decide to simply look at the pictures, and then takes things you see or notice in each picture, or only some of the pictures and run with it for your story. The pictures are designed to inspire, not to show an existing story or scenario .Its all 100% your imagination - what any of them mean, tell or the people depicted :)
